Kathmandu: Shree Krishna Janmashtami, the auspicious occasion commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated with immense devotion and reverence by Hindus across Nepal today. This celebration encompasses a diverse array of programs and festivities.
In accordance with ancient scriptures, Lord Shree Krishna is believed to have been born during the midnight of Bhadrakrishna Ashtami, as per the lunar calendar, during the Dwapar era. Lord Krishna is venerated as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the divine protector of humanity against evil, injustice, and malevolent forces. He is also revered as the proponent of the three fundamental principles of Gyanayog (the path of knowledge), Karmayog (the path of selfless action), and Bhaktiyog (the path of devotion).
Shree Krishna Janmashtami is observed to celebrate the virtuous deeds of Lord Krishna, who played a pivotal role in guiding humanity towards knowledge, truth, and spiritual immortality. The legendary tale of Lord Krishna's birth to Devaki and Vasudev, his captivity by the tyrant Kansa in Mathura, and his subsequent mission to enlighten humanity is cherished during this festive occasion.
One of Lord Krishna's revered roles is that of "Gopal," the compassionate herder who dedicatedly served and protected cows. He is also affectionately known as "Manmohan" for the mesmerizing melodies he played on his divine flute, captivating the hearts of all who heard its enchanting tunes.
Devotees from all walks of life throng to temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, with the renowned Shree Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur, being a significant focal point. This artistic temple, constructed from stone, stands as a testament to the devotion and artistry of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla of Patan, who commissioned its construction.
Religious organizations and institutions mark Lord Krishna's birth anniversary with vibrant processions featuring elaborately adorned idols of Lord Krishna and decorative portraits. Devotees, particularly women, spend the night in prayer, chanting devotional songs, dancing, and lighting oil-fed lamps to celebrate this sacred occasion.
